I just love this recipe. It’s quick and easy to make, and gives me a new breakfast option for Jed. Or dinner. Either way. (You know “breakfast for dinner” is always a winner!) French toast was always a favorite of mine, and I sorely missed it when we first had … Continue reading →
One month ago today I shared the first of my hot cocoa concoctions: Instant, Dairy and Fructose Free Hot Cocoa! In that post, I mentioned a “rock the universe” hot cocoa that we’d used, but had to shelve because coconut was the main component. Since Jed has Fructose Malabsorption, coconut … Continue reading →
This week has been an emotionally difficult week for me, with these wretched anniversaries reminding me of our rough year. So I decided that I needed to lighten the mood and indulge in a little not unhealthy, but not really healthy treat making. After Jed’s sudden comprehension of what a … Continue reading →
AND So I was looking around for some novel ways to use spaghetti squash recently, and stumbled upon Beard & Bonnet’s Hot Water Cornbread recipe. Well, butter my butt and call me a biscuit, Mama! My southern roots just vibrated with happiness! One thing about FPIES that really ticks me … Continue reading →
Once coconut milk was back on the menu, I dug out my old coconut recipes to see what I could do, and found our “favorite ice cream on earth recipe” made completely from coconut milk! This recipe is basically an internet staple; I’ve seen it in a million different places … Continue reading →
A while back, one of the moms on the FPIES boards asked for quinoa recipes. Another Mama recommended the website Healthful Pursuit, saying she had a ton of quinoa recipes! Always on the lookout for new recipes – or inspiration for creating my own – I checked it out. Am … Continue reading →
I’ve got a great “Sunday Brunch” recipe to kick off the weekend! One thing that’s been missing in our FPIES/Elimination Diet/Fructose avoidance world is ‘bready’ items…waffles, bread, pancakes, cupcakes, cookies, etc. I’ve been experimenting, but it’s hard to make suitable replacements when you’ve had to eliminate so many standard baking … Continue reading →
That’s the million dollar question, folks! A couple weeks ago, I was looking for a vegan muffin recipe to try out for Mr. Charm. As a reminder, he now must avoid dairy, egg, and fructose…I have muffin recipes but they all call for large quantities of sugar, maple syrup, honey, … Continue reading →
FPIES stands for Food Protein Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome. It is a rare food allergy that affects the gastrointestinal system. Reactions are delayed onset, usually 2-4 hours after a trigger food is eaten, but sometimes even longer than that.
Children with FPIES have symptoms that range from severe (violent vomiting to bile and hypovolemic shock) to mild (bloody diarrhea, sleep disturbances).
There is no test for FPIES. It is diagnosed by clinical observation and ruling out other possibilities.
There also are no tests to determine trigger foods. FPIES parents must simply feed their child a food, then wait to see if they react.
