One of the most frequently searched-for recipes found on my site is my egg-free, gluten-free Salmon Patties. It makes me so happy to know I’m helping some people figure out how to make something delicious again after losing eggs and gluten from their diet! Unfortunately, that recipe was from my early … Continue reading →
One fabulous side benefit of having a fun-filled weekend away from home is two small children whose sleep schedules are completely thrown off! Children who don’t go to sleep until nearly midnight don’t leave their mama a lot of time to write coherently, after all. I decided it was kinder … Continue reading →
Pre-FPIES and pre-fructmal, one of the most delicious creations to come from my kitchen was my vegan banana bread. ALL of us loved this bread! It was flavorful, sweet but not too sweet, moist, and all but melted in your mouth. It was still substantial enough to also withstand being … Continue reading →
Do you know what the two most delicious words in the English language are? CROCKPOT BREAKFAST. Do you know why? It allows you to NOT use your brain first thing in the morning! I don’t know about you, but I am not a morning lark by nature. Pre-FPIES and FructMal, … Continue reading →
We are still snowed in. Well, actually, we’re ICED in, which is worse. Theoretically, we could leave the house. We couldn’t safely leave until about 11:00 a.m., and we’d have to be back by about 4:00 p.m., or else we’d risk getting caught on icy roads as the temperature re-freezes … Continue reading →
On occasion I come up with a recipe that just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. This is one of them. Of course, that could be just because it’s pumpkin pie, and that happens to be one of my FAVORITE desserts of all time! Pre-TED and FPIES, Thanksgiving … Continue reading →
Before I talk about this AWESOME recipe, I thought I’d give you a little update. Last night, Zac had a definite FPIES reaction. No confusion; his diapers told the story quite clearly. (I’ll refrain from details, as I’m about to talk about food!) We’re not 100% sure it is the … Continue reading →
(Edited Post Notes: I know, I know – I said this was Vegan, originally! Obviously, it is clearly NOT a Vegan recipe once you read through it. What can I say? My tired Mommy brain thought writing “dairy, egg, gluten, and fructose-free” looked too cumbersome and made the decision that … Continue reading →
Jed constantly digs through the pantry. He likes to stack and sort things, and pantry food is perfect for that. Today’s recipe comes from one of his pantry discoveries, and the subsequent nagging about two items we haven’t used before: canned pumpkin, and hemp hearts. I always stock up on … Continue reading →
Well, it’s been a little serious here lately, what with probiotic trials, paper eating, and Mommy Meltdowns, so I’m lightening it up a bit with a new recipe today! When Jed was first diagnosed with MPI (Milk Protein Intolerance) I struggled mightily in the kitchen. ALL of my limited cooking … Continue reading →
FPIES stands for Food Protein Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome. It is a rare food allergy that affects the gastrointestinal system. Reactions are delayed onset, usually 2-4 hours after a trigger food is eaten, but sometimes even longer than that.
Children with FPIES have symptoms that range from severe (violent vomiting to bile and hypovolemic shock) to mild (bloody diarrhea, sleep disturbances).
There is no test for FPIES. It is diagnosed by clinical observation and ruling out other possibilities.
There also are no tests to determine trigger foods. FPIES parents must simply feed their child a food, then wait to see if they react.
