So far 2016 has made me yearn with longing for the return of 2015. And 2015 was a really rough year for us. Go, 2016! The sad part is, the New Year started off great! I had to work that weekend, but I picked up a nifty 30+ hour layover … Continue reading →
I hope you all had a really excellent Christmas! It’s almost the end of 2015, and I figured it would be good to do a little “year end recap” and update. For starters, I’ve been rather quiet on the blog front lately, but that’s actually because I’ve been writing furiously … Continue reading →
Thanksgiving did turn out to be delayed for us; Darrel was still feeling miserable from his sickness so we postponed our family gathering. Based on how Darrel felt, we really should have waited even longer, but he thought he would feel well enough to have Thanksgiving on Friday so we … Continue reading →
Last time I updated, I said that we had started a green bean trial on Zac. It looked so promising that first day (after we convinced him to try one). Sadly, the green bean trial has flopped. The second day of the trial, I couldn’t get him to eat any … Continue reading →
Last week was brutal. I’m feeling very off my game right now, so this might not be the best writing I’ve ever done. Still, I wanted to give an update on the tomato trial, since I announced it last week. The tomato trial never happened. Zac helped us pick out tomatos … Continue reading →
If you’re married (and traditional), you probably remember standing in front of the minister, staring lovingly into your future spouses eyes, and glibly, naively, repeating those beautiful words: …in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, for richer and for poorer, til death do us part. I … Continue reading →
Well. That had to be the absolute weirdest sickness I’ve ever had. After I said I was definitely getting sick, I went to bed feeling like total dirt. When I woke up, I still felt like dirt…but the fever had broken! I spent the morning absolutely wanting to crawl into … Continue reading →
Last Thursday, Zac had an FPIES reaction to oats. We were understandably sad and upset. More than that, though, this was the most severe acute reaction he’s had since his hospitalization at 7 weeks old; we were quite edgy about how his little body would cope with such profuse vomiting. … Continue reading →
Sorry it’s been a week since I wrote. Believe it or not, the lost bag saga has continued through this time, and I haven’t had the time or the energy to write about it. I’ve been too frustrated and crying too much just living it; recapping it was more than … Continue reading →
After last weeks stomach bug, things settled down somewhat on the kiddo front. Both boys bounced back fairly quickly, though none of our tummies were at 100% by the end of the week. Still, no more vomiting or diarrhea, so it’s a step in the right direction. We didn’t have any … Continue reading →
FPIES stands for Food Protein Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome. It is a rare food allergy that affects the gastrointestinal system. Reactions are delayed onset, usually 2-4 hours after a trigger food is eaten, but sometimes even longer than that.
Children with FPIES have symptoms that range from severe (violent vomiting to bile and hypovolemic shock) to mild (bloody diarrhea, sleep disturbances).
There is no test for FPIES. It is diagnosed by clinical observation and ruling out other possibilities.
There also are no tests to determine trigger foods. FPIES parents must simply feed their child a food, then wait to see if they react.
